The real difference is a focus on you and your financial goals.
WESTconsin Credit Union is a not-for-profit financial cooperative owned by its members. That means any profits are invested back into our membership through higher dividend rates on savings accounts, lower interest rates on loans, and lower fees.
- Ownership: Whether you deposit $5 or $5 million, you have equal ownership in our credit union.
- Volunteer Boards: We're governed by a voluntary board of directors, not stockholders. All members vote to elect the volunteers who serve on the board.
- Social Purpose: Here, it's all about "People Helping People," not making a profit. This philosophy guides us to get involved in community charitable activities and worthwhile causes.
- Products & Services: You'll find a full range of products at WESTconsin that other financials also offers, but here, you're more than just an account number. We invest in seeing you succeed and help you along your financial journey.

The Credit Union Movement
The Credit Union Movement started in 19th century Europe as a way to help working-class individuals and families who were shut out of the banking system. The world's first credit union was formed in Germany in 1864, and the popular model of economic democracy spread quickly to the United States.
In 1934, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Federal Credit Union Act and National Credit Union Act into law. With that, credit unions could organize anywhere in America under state or federal charter, and the first government agency to oversee credit unions, the Bureau of Federal Credit Unions, was formed. Today it's known as the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA).
